PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has distanced himself from the remarks made by Kapar lawmaker Abdullah Sani last night likening a vote for deputy party president Mohamed Azmin Ali as a vote against Anwar’s chances of becoming prime minister.
Azmin is facing a challenge for the party’s number two spot from vice-president Rafizi Ramli, who has announced his running team under the banner of ‘Reformasi 20 Tahun’ (20 years of reform).
When asked to comment on Abdullah’s statement last night, Anwar said party members should conform to policies before making remarks.
“That is his personal opinion. I would advice they confine themselves to policies in issues,” he told reporters at the sidelines of a gathering of students at the Malaysian Student Leaders Summit XII in Kuala Lumpur today.
Last night Abdullah said PKR members will destroy their hopes of seeing Anwar as prime minister if they vote for Azmin in the upcoming party elections.
Abdullah, who is in Rafizi’s team and is contesting for a seat on the central executive council, had accused Azmin of having ambitions to become the next prime minister when Dr Mahathir Mohamad steps down.
He also said Azmin has the support of Daim Zainuddin and Dr Mahathir. – August 11, 2018.
