NAJIB Razak should be given his day in court to defend himself in a trial that is based on rule of law, said the former prime minister’s cousin and former cabinet member Hishammuddin Hussein.
“I just hope the process is fair and he has a fair trial and say in the proceedings. Got to be based on rule of law,” Hishammuddin told reporters in a press conference at the Parliament lobby today.
However, the Sembrong lawmaker declined to comment if he felt Najib was being politically persecuted by the Pakatan Harapan administration.
“It is not for me to say that. We will have to see how the proceedings go.”
Najib was charged today at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court for money laundering with regards to SRC International, a former subsidiary of graft-ridden 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
The three additional charges were under Section 4(1) the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
The disgraced former Umno leader now faces a total of seven charges, the earlier four on July 4 being three counts of criminal breach of trust and one count of misusing his position under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act.
Najib had set up 1MDB when he became prime minister in 2009.
If Najib were to be found guilty on all seven charges, and if his sentences were to run consecutively, he might face a jail sentence of up to 125 years. – August 8, 2018.
