RTM contracts exempted from open-tender ruling

Yasmin Ramlan

THE Pakatan Harapan government will allow state-owned Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) to keep contracts previously awarded to scores of local production companies during the previous Barisan Nasional administration.

The deals were in limbo after the new government planned to cancel the contracts which were awarded under a pitching system, saying that all government work must now be awarded through an open-tender process.

Communication and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo told reporters today that the issue had been discussed with the Finance Ministry and is considered resolved with the issuance of the exemption letters.

“I have been informed that the application has been approved and a letter will be released to RTM so they can continue with their projects,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.

The exemption is believed to have saved most of the companies involved from going bankrupt.

Gobind had told The Malaysian Insight last month that he had written to the Finance Ministry to seek exemptions for those contracts. – August 2, 2018.

  • WHY?
There must be transparency and fairness in all tender process! This should not be a protectionism economy - just like how the previous administration practised and everything was abused.
Come on Gobind Singh Deo... lets have an open forum on this. Dont revert to protectionism practices.. we will all suffer..
if you are worried that companies offered contracts on preferred basis will collapse, then restructure these companies, to help them.
Dont change or bend the SOPs and policies just to help a few companies..
