Use Tabung Harapan to fund MyBrain, says Umno Youth chief

THE government should channel the money donated to Tabung Harapan to the MyBrain15 programme meant for postgraduate students, said Umno Youth chief Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

In a live broadcast with Utusan Online today, Asyraf said the government should use the donation to fund MyBrain15, instead of using it to pay for the country’s debts.

He said all countries had ever-increasing debts.

“Instead of using Tabung Harapan to repay the debt, which can never be fully repaid because any country will have increasing debts, it is better to use a fraction of the donation for the future generation.

“Give it (Tabung Harapan) to MyBrain if they do not have the funds. It is better to invest RM90 million to MyBrain than use it to pay the debt,” he said today.

Asyraf said the RM90 million budget allocated for the programme was approved by the previous administration under Najib Razak.

He said it was possible the new government was not used to the country’s treasury system, and that a budget would only have been approved if there were funds for the project.

“Maybe it did not reach the (education) ministry. That is why it has to request from the Finance Ministry, unless the Finance Ministry has no funds.

“But I am sure it has funds, because the previous government approved it,” he said.

As of July 25, Tabung Harapan has collected RMRM161,896,353.60. Collections for the fund will end on August 31.

Yetserday, Maszlee said the cost for the programme was higher than promised by the previous government.

He said the programme will cost RM612 million instead of RM90 million stated by the Barisan Nasional administration.

Maszlee came under fire recently after he said the programme had been put on hold due to allocations that never reached the Education Ministry.

He then said the remark was misunderstood, adding that the RM612 million must first receive approval due to its “huge financial implications”.

On Pakatan Harapan’s 100-day promises, Asyraf said it was dangerous how the PH government promised the “moon and stars” just to gain the people’s support.

“As a government, they should take into account the people’s worries, because these worries are founded.

“There were many statements made by individuals in PH, if not in the government, that caused the people to worry.”

PH pledged in its manifesto to fulfil 10 promises within 100 days of gaining victory.

Among the promises made were to abolish the goods and services tax (GST), abolish the Felda settlers’ debts, and introduce EPF for housewives. – July 31, 2018.

  • He doesnt understand the legal constitution of a fund which prohibit use of its assets for any other purpose. The fund is to reduce the national debt. End of story.

  • 1. By calling the government to do such shows hes not principled.

    2. One wonders whether he contributed to the fund or not.

  • Contribution to Tabung Harapan is meant for no other purpose than to reduce the government debt. One should not suggest otherwise.
