PERLIS mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin and Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P. Ramasamy have made peace after a war of words over allegations of terrorism.
In a closed door meeting arranged by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa, the two reached an agreement to let police investigations into Ramasamy’s alleged links with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE) take its course
Asri, who had been unhappy at Ramasamy for his persistent calls for Malaysia to deport controversial Muslim preacher Zakir Naik, today said the Penang leader had agreed that anyone given the right to stay in Malaysia should be allowed to do so as long as the person did not cause trouble.
Mujahid said after the meeting that people in disagreement over sensitive issues, such as religion, should not make provocative statements but find the proper channel to raise their concerns.
“Malaysians should be able to settle all matters at the discussion table,” Mujahid told reporters after the meeting at the Islamic Development Department office, today.
Asri and Ramasamy had been at each other’s throats since last week after the latter invited a pro-LTTE figure, V. Gopalasamy, to attend his son’s wedding.
Asri accused Ramasamy of hypocrisy for objecting to Zakir, who is wanted in India on chages of inciting racial hatred and inspiring terrorism, while supporting a terrorist group himself.
Zakir has permanent residency in Malaysia and Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has said that he can stay as long as he abides by the country’s laws.
More than 50 police reports have been lodged against Ramasamy for his alleged connection with the LTTE. – July 30, 2018.
