UMNO secretary-general Annuar Musa has retracted his remarks on a possible by-election in Langkawi, the federal seat held by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The Ketereh MP said it was a joke and people should not be offended.
“It can be anybody, it can be Ketereh, it can be Langkawi, so do not take offence,” Annuar told reporters when met at Parliament’s lobby today.
Bersatu members had been up in arms over Annuar’s remarks on the 93-year-old Dr Mahathir and the possibility of more by-elections while on the campaign trail for Barisan Nasional in Sungai Kandis two nights ago.
Dr Mahathir is also leads Bersatu and is chairman of Pakatan Harapan.
Annuar had said that by-elections were “a gift from God” for BN to test its strength and machinery.
“We don’t know where the next one will be. Maybe it’s Langkawi or maybe it’s Bera. Let’s just hope it’s not in Ketereh,” he had said.
Today, he apologised to those who felt offended.
“If anybody feels offended, I will apologise, there is no problem,” Annuar said.
He added he had nothing against Dr Mahathir and respected him as Malaysia’s leader.
“He is my boss, he is good man, he is the prime minister, he is an elected representative and he has job to do.
“You must respect the prime minister, do not make a fool of him. He is a statesman, he is our leader,” Annuar said. – July 26, 2018.
