POLICE yesterday detained two men to assist in investigations into the harassment of assemblyman Syerleena Abdul Rashid.
Penang police chief Commissioner A. Thaiveegan said the two were detained late yesterday evening.
One, aged 27, was arrested in Kelantan, and the other, aged 49, in Gombak, Selangor, he said.
“Investigation is in progress. Further details (will be shared) later,” he said in a WhatsApp message late last night.
Syerleena, who is Seri Delima assemblyman, has been attacked on social media since March last year. Despite being a Muslim herself, she is painted as being anti-Islam and is accused of attacking the Islamic Development Department.
The same allegations have been recycled repeatedly on the internet since last year, including during the 14th general election.
Earlier this month, the DAP member received a death note in her service centre’s letter box. Soon afterwards, posters accusing her of betraying Islam and declaring her blood “halal” for the spilling made the rounds online.
The police is investigating the death threat as criminal intimidation under Section 506 of the Penal Code.
The online attacks are being probed under Section 233 of the Multimedia and Communications Act for improper use of network facilities or network service. – July 21, 2018.

Threatening to kill someone is something we should not take lightly.
Needless to say the investigation must be air tight too.
