FROZEN accounts are not going to cripple Umno, its newly-minted Youth chief Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said.

He said the government’s freezing of Umno and its leaders’ bank accounts would not hamper the party’s struggles or stop it from organising activities and programmes.

He said such troubles would only make Umno and its grassroots more fired up.

“They should not think that Umno will become crippled because of its frozen accounts.

“When we are under pressure, our grassroots will become more fired up to fight,” he told a press conference at the Putra World Trade Centre this afternoon.

Recently, party president Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Umno’s bank accounts had been frozen by the authorities one day after the party announced that it was sending funds to its divisions.

He said in the past, when Umno was in government, it never frozen the accounts of its political rivals even though the Registrar of Societies had suspended Bersatu.

“We never put restraints on the other parties that used to be in the opposition.

“Bersatu was once suspended by RoS but we never had their accounts frozen,” he said.

Asyraf, who was formerly a minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, also said the youth wing organised a series of roadshows recently in Malacca, Negri Sembilan and Sabah using their own funds.

“Even though the party’s accounts are frozen, we still held programmes. We have a new culture now. Our grassroots are ready to make sacrifices and raise funds to cover lodgings and activity costs.

“For the trip to Sabah, for instance, I only paid for my flight. We didn’t stay at a hotel but at the house of the local Umno Youth leader. Funds were raised to pay for the banquet.

“Now we have a culture of making sacrifices for our struggle,” he said.

Meanwhile, on the government proposing a political funding law to prevent corruption, Asyraf said it was a good move.

He said the previous government had wanted to introduce such a law in the past but it was opposed by parties that were formerly in the opposition but now in the administration.

“We should be transparent with contributions we receive for the party. It will show the people that we have nothing to hide when we have a law like this.

“It is not something new. Developed countries have this law.”

Asyraf added that in moving forward to ensure better democracy, a law on political funding would also prevent negative perception when parties receive contributions for their coffers.  – July 9, 2018.

  • It is more accurate to think that funds were frozen in contemplation of the ongoing investigations to uncover evidence, and not to "cripple" anyone?..

  • He sets up PH to a standards his side has failed miserably and demand PH achieve it and he is suppose to be a religious scholar. Hypocrite of the lowest kind. He should go fight in Syria or Yemen before opening his mouth or he is nothing but a terrorist with his mouth.

  • Lets see how long you're willing to sacrifice without 'dedak'. Six months? One year?
