MOHD Razlan Muhammad Rafii, who initiated the donation drive to help pay half of Najib Razak’s bail, is confident of meeting the target of RM500,000 by tomorrow.
The Umno Federal Territories Youth chief said there was ample time to raise the required amount as some people had personally gone to Najib’s house to hand over their donation to the former prime minister.
“And I was informed that even some divisions have set up and handled their own funds, to collect contribution from the members. Some have raised around RM5,000 or RM3,000, so God willing, we can actually get an additional RM150,000,” Razlan told The Malaysian Insight.
The bail has to be posted at the Putrajaya court by 3pm tomorrow.
As at 9.30am today, the fund launched by Solidariti Bersama Datuk Najib has collected RM310,245.
On July 4, Najib, 64, was charged with three counts of criminal breach of trust and one count of abuse of power involving SRC International Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of his brainchild, 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
The high court set bail at RM1 million and allowed him to pay the first RM500,000 on the same day he was charged and the rest by tomorrow. The sureties were Najib’s children Nooryana Najwa, 30, and Norashman, 27.
The court also ordered Najib to surrender his passports, including a diplomatic one.
Razlan, who is also Seputeh Umno deputy division chief, meanwhile said the contribution to the fund also came from people around the world.
“There are people who contribute RM5 or RM10 because they still remember Najib’s contributions.
He said the total amount collected will be given to Najib tomorrow at his Jalan Langgak Duta house at 10am.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) earlier today said it had no hand in freezing a bank account set up to help Najib.
Its deputy chief commissioner, Azam Baki, said concerned parties should refer the matter to the bank for clarification, not the MACC, as it has nothing to do with the move.
It was reported that Pekan Wanita Umno chief Zalmah Abdul Rahman had said that the Bank Rakyat account set up to help pay the remainder of the bail had been suspended.
Najib’s daughter Nooryana Najwa recently took to social media to complain that her bank accounts, as well as the account of her 10-month-old son had been frozen.
Nooryana Najwa said she got a call from the bank that the accounts had been frozen after posting the first tranche of RM500,000 bail for her father.
She said her account was used to pay for her study fees while her son’s account contained just RM100 from his first duit raya.
Her brother Norashman’s accounts are also frozen.
The MACC, however, denied freezing the bank account of Najib’s grandson. – July 8, 2018.
