More than 1,600 sign online petition to remove Thomas as A-G

A TWO-DAY-OLD online petition to get Tommy Thomas removed as the attorney-general has so far garnered more than 1,600 signatures.

The “Support YDPA fired Tommy Thomas as attorney-general” was started by a Facebook user named Fyizuddin Jaafar.

It has 1,645 signatures as of 9.30am today.

The Malaysian Insight is also trying to contact Fyizuddin.

In the description, Fyizuddin wrote in capital letters that an attorney-general (A-G) should be fluent in the Malay language to be appointed to that position.

“This is an embarrassing to the country and Malaysian too. This also will damage the bravery of the honourable his Majesty YDPA (Yang di-Pertuan AGong).

“We support YDPA for replacing and fired the embarrassing AG of Malaysia. No more jokes on this serious matter please,” he added in broken English.

The petition aims to garner 2,500 signatures.

On Wednesday, Thomas had to move his press conference at the Kuala Lumpur court complex lobby to a room on the upper floor after he was heckled by the crowd, demanding that he speak in English.

Thomas was supposed to speak to reporters after proceedings at the Sessions and high court where former prime minister Najib Razak was earlier charged with three counts of criminal breach of trust and for abusing his position.

Umno blogger, Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, also known as Papagomo, shouted at Thomas to speak in Bahasa Malaysia, which led to several hundred Umno supporters taunting the A-G. – July 6, 2018.

  • This is an international case. It should be conducted in English for the sake of transparency. There is no Malaysian law stating that the court proceedings should be conducted in the Malay language only.

  • When the old AG who knows Malay well but compriomises on the rule of law there was no petition. The issue here is whether the language is a priority or the essence of Law.
My perspectice language is second to advocating the rule of law. Tommy Thomas is the right man for AG.

  • If the accused, Najib, could not understand English, then it should be conducted in Malay which is his native language. This is to ensure fairness to the accused person which is the paramount importance in a criminal trial. Now, Najib jolly well understands English, ... what's the problem? Shafee can't is it?

    • They have interpreters in the Courts....whats the problems?

Posted 7 years ago by Azis Yusoff · Reply

    • They are just afraid of Tommy and they are using language as an issue. An intelligent thinking person would know that it is easier for a person to put his points across in the language he thinks in. To argue, you need to use the right terms and jargons, and for Tommy he is more comfortable in using English. He never said he does not understand BM, he just requested for the trial to be in English. Why is Shafee so threatened? Seriously, don't insult the intelligence of most Malaysians. Get on with the trial and keep it clean and fair.

  • Whats wrong if the AG is not fluent in Malay as long as he does the right thing when previous AG was supporting corruption outrightly is that ok why no petitions were written . Come on have some common sense we have other countries involved ,so it has to be done in English . We wIl have translators next tIme around if you dont understand English .

  • Only a racist with ulterior motive will resort to such low. When the country was being degraded by endless scandals & financial theft, these idiots were quiet. The previous AG who was instrumental in enabling the theft of M01 was accepted without any protest.
Now that a new AG has been selected based on skill, knowledge & experience to prosecute the theft & scandals under BN, which would not only help the country recoup billions of ringgit but also ensure the guilty parties be meted justice & safeguard the country's reputation as safe investment country, suddenly emerges these disgraceful hindrances. The AG can conduct this case in english as it has international ramifications.
Ad for press conference, the AG & the defence council conducted the same in english.
While Malay is officially the national language, English should be used where it is more appropriate as in this case. Don't forget, 1mdb is also being investigated & prosecuted in other countries. So let's be open minded & support the best person to lead the prosecution as decided by our pm.

  • The message for the petition is written in broken English. Why doesn't Fyizuddin write it in Malay if he opposes the use of English in the first place? Is it because he feels his message needs to be heard by more people and this could be better achieved by using English?

  • Enough!!! No need to entertain all Najib the bugis lanun Umno lackeys and scumbags. Their petition can not even stir a fly !!!! Look at the donation drive and the petition signing. It is a joke and devoid of intelligence. Now it is only the very low kampong mentality group that is creating the ruckus but we see not the the top tier level doing any more for Najib. They know it is a lost cause and worried about the wee morning hours knocking on their doors. They are all completely washed out and not in equation for the New malaysia set up.

  • These UMNO goons behave the same way yesterday, today and forever. Which is a blessing in disguise. That means UMNO can only dream of coming back to power. Who wants a party synonymous to bullying, violence and thuggery to run this country. Sixty years is more than we can take.

Meanwhile, I think the A-G ought to brush up on his BM to be able to at least conduct a press conference in the national language.

  • Najib's trial commenced on Wed. 4th July, with 4 charges & with the lead prosecutor Tommy Thomas (TT) appllying for bail to be set at RM1 mil. for each charge, but with his lawyer, Shafie, objecting that it is too high. High Court Judge Justice Sofian Abd Razak finally set bail at RM1 mil for all the 4 charges.

Shafie also applied for an interim gag order against any statement that can potentially affect Najib's case as per all 4 charges and to which TT raised an objection, arguing that the principle of freedom of speech in the Federal Constitution should must always remain supreme.
Justice Sofian granted the application for the interim gag order.

Najib was so impressed with Shafie already, that he is confident of walking away free eventually.

However, it is to be made known, at this juncture, that Justice Sofian was born in Kuala Lipis, which is also the birthplace of Najib. Justice Sofian has a younger brother in Mohd Sofi Abd Razak who just happens to be ADUN for Benta (N5) in Pahang, representing UMNO / BN, in which Najib was the former supreme head.

When asked & mentioned to him, TT was not aware that Justice Sofian has a brother in Mohd Sofi, the UMNO State Executive Councillor of Pahang, also being the State from which Najib hails. Little wonder that Shafie got his ways in the trial, and Justice Sofian was exceptionally lenient and sympathetic to Najib.

To this effect, few retired Judges feel that Justice Sofian should be credible and recuse himself. While Justice Sofian was playing his part, Shafie is known for bribing judges to win his cases right up to Federal Court.

Chief Justice of Malaya (CJM) is Justice Ahmad Maarof, who, as one of his many responsibilities, basically decides which judge is assigned to hear any particular case. CJM is a Federal Court Judge who shuffles or arranges the sitting of judges and can discipline judges as to whether each one is discharging one's duties satisfactorily.

Justice Maarof's wife is a teacher who is active in Girl Guide Movement and is very close to Rosmah, Najib's wife.

So, one can now see the connections of each of the personalities involved in this trial as to establish whether it is fair.

    • Better to learn English in a globalized world than Malay ( an unimportant language when the world is taking as a whole). When Razak commited the educational genocide on many Non-Malays in the 1970s ( they failed BM so whiole exam failed, could not go to form 6 or local university), many left overseas. That was a blessing-Many non-Malays speak better english, got better overseas qualifications. Bumiputra politician children also studied overseas.Pandai.

  • Please get on with it. This is a non-issue in the specific context of this case. 1,600 signatures does not mean 1,600 people understand the nuance the resonate from the case. Please, getting rid of corruption is the agenda of the day here.
