JAMAL Md Yunos will be charged in court as soon as he arrives in Malaysia from Indonesia, the police said today.
Selangor police Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Fadzil Ahmat said the Sungai Besar Umno chief will be charged promptly as he had fled the cops.
“Jamal will be arriving at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) from Jakarta, Indonesia, at 2.15pm.
Section 224 of the Penal Code covers escape from lawful custody and is punishable by imprisonment of up to two years, a fine or both.
Fadzil added that Jamal had two arrest warrants for two separate charges, which will be read out to him in court today.
Earlier, Inspector-General of Police Fuzi Harun told The Malaysian Insight that Indonesian authorities are likely to extradite Jamal back to Kuala Lumpur today, adding that the authorities went over to Indonesia a couple of days ago after the Sungai Besar Umno division head was arrested.
“It is most likely he will be deported today. I still have not got a firm confirmation but I think is today,” he said when contacted.
Jamal, who is the leader of the Red Shirts movement, was nabbed by Indonesian police three days ago.
He jumped police bail in May and had gone into hiding since, occasionally releasing videos taunting the authorities for being unable to locate him.
He was arrested in Jakarta about 6.15pm on Monday while getting a haircut.
Jamal is charged with being a public nuisance over his smashing of cases of beer in front of the Selangor secretariat building last October.
He is also under investigation for contravening the Firearms Act by displaying a pistol in public.
Jamal was charged while being treated for a back problem at Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital and fled while in remand.
Despite his no-show at the recent Umno elections, Jamal retained his post as Sungai Besar Umno division chief. He had vied for the post of Umno Youth chief but lost.
At the party elections on Saturday, Jamal, who had addressed the delegates via a video stream, was re-elected to lead the division for another three years. – July 5, 2018.
