WEARING a sober-coloured baju kurung and a matching floral-print headscarf, Rosmah Mansor lacked the opulence she is famous for when she appeared at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex, where her husband was charged today.
Former prime minister Najib Razak claimed trial to four charges of criminal breach of trust and abuse of power, over funds missing from SRC International, a former subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
Rosmah, who did not appear at the hearings in the sessions court and high court, briefly made an appearance after Najib’s bail was set at RM1 million.
She visited Najib in a holding room, where he waited for his bail process to be completed by his two children, Nooryana Najwa and Norashman, and their lawyer, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah.
Rosmah, known for her lavish collection of handbags, jewellery and clothes, met with scores of Umno members, who turned up to support her husband, their former president.
She told several women not to shed tears for what Najib and the family are going through, and embraced them.
“Don’t ever cry. I don’t want anybody to cry,” she is heard saying in a video published by Channel NewsAsia.
A woman’s voice is heard saying special prayers have been conducted for Najib.
Najib claimed trial at the sessions court to three counts of criminal breach of trust, and one count of using his position for gratification.
The charges are related to RM42 million that had allegedly been siphoned off from SRC International and flowed into his accounts.
The four charges, under the Penal Code and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act, were heard before sessions court judge Zainal Abidin Kamaruddin.
Each charge carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine. – July 4, 2018.
