Ruckus over language a distraction from Najib’s trial, says Syed Saddiq

MALAYSIANS were more concerned about the supposed breach of trust and abuse of power by a former prime minister than the language used by the attorney-general in his press conference, said Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

The youth and sports minister said the disruption during A-G Tommy Thomas’s press conference today was to distract Malaysians from the real issue, which was former prime minister Najib Razak’s alleged misdeeds.

“I truly believe that this is just a distraction from the court proceedings.

“Because I’m very confident that the millions of Malaysians out there care a lot more about saving the millions of money and assets which have been swindled than the press conference conducted by Tommy Thomas which doesn’t fit their description,” he told reporters after attending the Malaysia Social Media Summit 2018 in Kuala Lumpur.

He was responding to an incident earlier today where Umno supporters hurled abuses at Thomas to speak in Bahasa Malaysia in his press conference after Najib’s proceedings at the Kuala Lumpur sessions and high courts.

Thomas had to move his press conference elsewhere.

“If these people really respect the court of law and due process, they will allow for that (press conference) to happen,” Syed Saddiq said.

Blogger and Umno Youth exco Papagomo, whose real name is Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, was among the Umno members who were present at court complex today and had shouted “Cakap Bahasa Melayu” at the A-G.

Najib today claimed trial at the sessions court to three counts of criminal breach of trust and one count of using his position for gratification, under separate acts.

The four charges, under the Penal Code and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act, were heard before sessions court judge Zainal Abidin Kamaruddin.

All the charges carry a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine.

The high court then set bail at RM1 million, and ordered Najib to surrender his diplomatic passports.

“If there were any wrongdoings, the full brunt of the law should be taken against him especially since it allegedly involved billions of taxpayers money and therefore affecting the lives of millions of Malaysians,” Syed Saddiq added. – July 4, 2018.

  • The main issue here is corruption by Najib, not the language used by AG at press conference. That should be taken up at another forum. Let's move forward not backward.

  • Syed Saddiq.... remember? You are the one that clamour and hanker after Lim Guan Engs treacherous Act of writing a financial statement in Mandarin despite the fact that it was a translation from the official Malay Finance statement issued officially in the Ministry of Finance website. Another translation in English was issued. You above all demanded action to be taken on Lim Guan Eng amounting to seditious intention to rile up the Malays hurt feelings.

Well, in this case, Mr Shafee rightly made his case that the proceedings MUST be in Bahasa Melayu and everything procedural MUST be in Bahasa Melayu, and if Tommy Thomas failure to master the language, then it is his folly to lose the case.

So it shall be, IN BAHASA MELAYU.

    • He is learning the art of convenience. Speak what is neccessary to influence and win the situation. His episodes with LGE holds no more importance now but at then it was to show his existence and being communal in making a statement. He is a freshie and should abstain to get involves in such dirty politicking
