NAJIB Razak, who made global headlines yesterday after he was arrested at his residence in Langgak Duta, Kuala Lumpur, is expected to be charged today with multiple offences under the Penal Code, and Anti-Money Laundering Act and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act.

The Pekan lawmaker was held overnight at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission lock-up in Putrajaya. He will be brought to the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex by 8.30am today.

Najib’s arrest came after five weeks of intense investigations by the new Pakatan Harapan government into the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal.

His supporters said the arrest was expected and it was political vengeance by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his new administration.

But in recent weeks, investigators seized RM1.1 billion in cash and valuables from premises linked to the former prime minister. They also froze more than 400 bank accounts containing RM1.1 billion.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief Mohd Shukri Abdull said yesterday they have concrete proof that the money in the frozen accounts was from 1MDB.

The Wall Street Journal’s expose of how billions of ringgit were siphoned off 1MDB from 2010 to 2014 trails the stolen funds flowing into Najib’s bank accounts. One trail totalled US%731 million while another was RM42 million.

The 65-year-old former prime minister and Umno president was grilled on three occasions by the MACC, the latest being last month.

He was questioned on his involvement in former 1MDB subsidiary SRC International, as well as the RM2.6 billion found in two personal bank accounts.

He, however, until today has denied any wrongdoing and insisted that the monies were donations.

In court today, he is expected to be represented by Umno lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah while new Attorney-General Tommy Thomas will lead the prosecution.

Thomas recently replaced Mohamed Apandi Ali as A-G. Apandi had earlier said there was insufficient evidence to charge Najib with any crime.

The Malaysian Insight brings you live updates from today’s proceedings.

  • When he was in power, he got the AG and judges under his thumb to help him stay out of court, but today no one can help him avoid court proceedings. The scumbag must be "grilled" thoroughly and made to spit out the truth of his criminal acts against the people and the nation.

  • What a dramatic change of fortunes and a fall from grace for MO1. A year ago, he was a guest at the White House, last night he was a guest at the MACC lockup in Putrajaya. This is stuff of a mega movie blockbuster which is rivetting not only 35 million Malaysians but also plenty more the world over.

  • Start the proceeding with Najib in orange lock up attire. Nothing special to be accorded for a criminal. Not in the guise as ex PM. Did he deserve to be even mentioned as Ex-PM, more like a robber with all special powers man made by him and endowed to him by him in the plundering. Stop the double standards and treat a criminal as criminal. If he is allow certain privillages then reinstate him to be the PM and let him continue robbing as the current crop of legal arbitrators do not have the gumption to act at all. There should not be any remorse in being empahtic for his wrong doing as shown by one silly whistle blower who contradict himself as being his fieriest critics but a 180 degrees turn around in being a hypocrite requesting for a better treatment due to the rationale and recognition of the criminal as ex PM. Do we all do that in the first place of our thoughts when it is an ordinary lay man who are caugh for the crime but we remorsefully request for the criminal to be well treated as he /she could be a son / daughter , father / mother , brother / sister or what ever. How come we could easily comes to term that a criminal is just a criminal. What's so special about Najib who had during his life time as a young politician learn the trade of manipulating in all score to his keeping and have no iota of care and concerns when the country is bleeding. Tell it to the nation that we should forgive and forget Najibs' crime as he is a ex PM , a scion of the galmorous Razak families who are receiving most of the loots and we are just rakyat devoid of intelligence. Phui!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
