FORMER Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin yesterday set out his own vision to rejuvenate the party, saying he would not compromise the party’s dignity.

He told Sabah Umno members last night he is not a one-term president and neither will he “negotiate with others” in efforts to rejuvenate the Malay party.

“I am not a one-term candidate. I won’t be a temporary president. I met Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, and he wants to be president for only a term.

“This is not right. It is impossible to be president only for three years and by the time your term is over, Umno will only have one or two years to prepare for the election. There is not enough time to prepare all the election machineries. This is impossible

I’m not going to wait until Razaleigh steps down. I want to be Umno president during this time of war,” he said.

Tengku Razaleigh and interim Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi are Khairy’s rivals for the party president’s post.

The party is expected to hold its election on June 30.

Khairy said  he will not negotiate with other parties, saying Umno has its own pride and values.

“We must have the energy. We must stand up and fight against the new government. We must be brave to go against them even when in Parliament.

“We can negotiate with other parties, even with any of the ruling parties. But if I’m president, my priority is to strengthen Umno, not initiate negotiations with any other parties.

“We have pride and values. We just can’t let the things that have happened as a reason to negotiate.

“If we talk to them now, we are negotiating at a position where we are most weak,” said Khairy, in reference to his other rival, Zahid, who met prime minister and Bersatu chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad recently. – June 27, 2018.

  • UMNO need a renaissance. So does this country. Hopefully you are part of it. The old bunch can't do it. They are too entrenched in their ways and merely pay lip service.
