PROMINENT lawyer Ambiga Sreenevasan said that she was not interested in becoming the new Election Commission (EC) chairman.

When asked what she thought about election watchdog Bersih 2.0’s proposal to include her name among other candidates for the post, Ambiga gave a firm no.

“Unlikely. No,” she told reporters outside Ilham Tower in Kuala Lumpur today.

Yesterday, Bersih 2.0 said they would propose a few names, including Ambiga’s, for the new EC chairman post to prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for consideration.

Bersih 2.0 chairman Shahrul Aman Mohd Saar also suggested names of judges to be candidates for the post, and said that the new EC chairman must be free from political links.

Ambiga is a member of the Institutional Reform Committee (IRC) as well as the president of National Human Rights Society.

The IRC was established on May 15 and will present its findings and recommendations to the Council of Eminent Persons, which will then present its report to Dr Mahathir. – June 22, 2018.

  • It is obvious, the one who criticise the most should take up this post, not sure why she is not taking it?

    • Simple, she is not power crazy and she calls a spade, a spade. Is pointing out what is wrong criticising? Many Malaysians just cannot differentiate between the two.
