PAKATAN Harapan’s policies will pave the way for a colour-blind Malaysia, prominent lawyer Syahredzan Johan said.

The newly appointed political secretary to DAP’s Lim Kit Siang said after PH’s win, there have been a number of instances that have proven Malaysians are united.

“I think PH’s electoral victory has somewhat broken some race or religious barriers, although more work needs to be done.

“We can be heartened by the many instances of togetherness of the people post-GE14, for example, about the reports of multi-faith buka puasa in places like Petaling Jaya and Penang.

“I think with this government encouraging such interactions, we can go a long way in removing whatever barriers that are left,” the 35-year-old told The Malaysian Insight.

Syahredzan said he accepted the offer to be Lim’s political secretary as he wanted to help the government break racial boundaries, especially among the Malays.

“It is to assist the party and Kit Siang to bridge that gap, if any, between the party and Malaysians, as well as the Malays.

“I want to help the party as much as I can so that we all can ensure that this new Malaysia becomes a success.”

Despite his father being the former Media Prima chairman, Syahredzan said his parents gave him the liberty to choose which political path he followed.

“My father (Johan Jaaffar) has always been supportive of what I have done. He also knows that I had been stumping for PH in GE14, so I suppose it would be natural for me to jump into politics.”

Syahredzan is known for his work on cases of public interests, especially those related to human rights and constitutional law.

He has appeared as counsel in several high-profile cases, including in artist Fahmi Reza’s case of drawing a caricature of former prime minister Najib Razak. – June 12, 2018.
