Umno lost perception game, says Ku Li

UMNO lost the game of perception, resulting in the party’s fall from power, said Tengku Razaleigh Tengku Hamzah.

The Umno veteran said cost-of-living issues and the goods and services tax were, without a doubt, the major reasons Pakatan Harapan was able to capture Putrajaya.

“To me, these are the main factors why the rakyat, in both urban and rural areas, were not in favour of us, didn’t support us.

“Besides that, it’s a game of perception, which we lost,” said Tengku Razaleigh, also known as Ku Li, in a press conference today.

Unlike Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, Ku Li refused to go into detail when asked whether former party president Najib Razak and 1Malaysia Development Bhd were victims of the perception game.

“I’m not particularising on anything because people threw all sorts of banter at us during the elections.

“And, nothing was dominant. The only thing that was dominant, that was debated whether in town or rural areas, was the question of how do we make ends meet,” he said, adding that Umno “obviously” did not handle the matter of perception well.

Khairy recently said all roads in Umno’s downfall in the 14th general election led back to the party’s decision not to confront Najib over 1MDB.

He had said the collective failure of party leaders and ministers to demand answers over the multibillion-ringgit financial scandal led to Umno and Barisan Nasional’s catastrophic defeat in the May 9 polls.

Ku Li said Umno accepts the GE14 loss, and offered an apology to Malaysians for the party’s mistakes.

“We apologise to the people for all our failings and mistakes. We really, sincerely apologise.

“If they think we have wronged them, we apologise as a party.”

He said though he does not speak on behalf of other BN components, he feels he ought to for Umno.

He said he believes that Umno will return as a strong opposition force after the party polls on June 30.

  • Gosh!!!!!!!!!!. I hope you will be elected as the Umno President. Teach all your Umno guys about perception and that the harsh reality of making end meets is not a concern but a painted perceptions. What freaking drinks , food or smoke are you on to come out with such unbelievaable dumb conclusion and you were holdin a post as finance minister before. You just affirmed that Umno pool of leaders are all from dump shit hole. You just reminded me of Marie Antoinette that the Frenches should not have hunger as they can have the cakes to eat. Her perception of no hunger is equally to your idiotic assumption that the high cost of living and GS are there but it is only a selling of that perception that caused Umno down fall not the actual hardship from the two causes. Beats me how you will manage to take on the young turks in the parliament from your wish to be an opposition leader. God forbid for it wil makes a mockery and reduce the parliament session into a frenzy state of walled chimps screaming at the loudest of menaningless scream.

    • If he is sincere in wanting UMNO's revival he should not contest in the Party Election.

      Actually KJ should contest the Party Presidency.

  • 1MDB, FELDA, Scorpion submarine scandals were pure daylight corruption not perception so too are people like Jho Low, lembu woman and the father of all scandals Najib. UMNO will never recover if these bunch of leaders are still around and that including you. There is an elephant in the room where only UMNO refuse to see.

  • Ku Li, you are no leader. When it matters most to the rakyat, you were silent. The 1MDB n many other schemes n projects were full of corruption n money laundering, which has caused so much debt for our future generation, yet you were silent. Your diagnosis of losing the perception game to PH is anything but a stupid n wrong analysis. It seems you got no clue as to why Umno lost. Ask the man-on-the-street, and he will tell you. There were so much corruption, arrogance, abused of power, bashing up other races n religion, threats, etc.. all these does not sit well with the rakyat. It's nothing to do with perception. It's reality of being the receiving end of Umno's follies n bashing

  • UMNO still didn't get why they lose out in election. The game is simple, you hurt the wallet of the citizen = bye bye government. Whether you like it or you don't like it. The only thing of what's been transpire within the citizen mouth is fairly simple, UMNO is arrogant and all the UMNO supporter are rich, nothing goes to the citizen till near election. Oh one more thing that also play around citizen mouth, UMNO = Government = What Tax Payer Money = UMNO own pocket money, UMNO think is their money.
