HOME Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today said he accepted responsibility for Jamal Yunos’ flight to Indonesia.
Jamal, who is the Umno Sungai Besar division chief, is believed to have escaped to Indonesia after police announced he was wanted for investigations into nine cases.
The Red Shirts leader did not turn up for questioning at the Ampang police station last week but instead produced a video asking Muhyiddin to guarantee he would not be tortured by the authorities if he surrendered.
Police have obtained a warrant for his arrest.
“All (security) departments are under me and because of that, I think I bear responsibility (for Jamal’s escape),” he said to a question at a press conference in Putrajaya this morning.
Muhyiddin did not discount the possibility that negligence could have enabled Jamal to get away.
The ministry was investigating how Jamal had managed to give law enforcers the slip, he said. If Jamal had indeed left the country illegally, he would have been detected, Muhyiddin added.
Police have said Jamal is the subject of investigation in nine cases.
Investigations into three of the cases were complete and Jamal was being charged at the Ampang Puteri Hospital on May 25 as a result of the probes when he jumped bail and later failed to turn up at the Ampang police station.
Recently, the fugitive announced on Facebook that he had joined the race for the position of Umno Youth chief in the party polls later this month.
Jamal said he had decided to contest for the post after receiving support from his followers. – June 5, 2018.
