CERTAIN parties are telling people not to vote tomorrow in the Nenggiri state by-election, police said.
Kelantan police chief Muhamad Zaki Harun said stern action would be taken against those who make extreme, provocative statements that could threaten democracy and public order.
He said that such actions could be investigated under Section 4A(1) of the Election Offences Act 1954 for promoting feelings of ill-will or hostility.
“The police will ensure that the election process runs smoothly without any hindrance and that all voters will be able to vote safely and freely make their choice without being influenced by any individuals to refrain from fulfilling their responsibilities as voters,” he said in a statement today.
Zaki commended the majority of parties who have campaigned in a healthy and lawful manner.
“Any political party or individual is strictly prohibited from provoking one another to avoid disrupting public order,” he added.
The by-election is a straight fight between Barisan Nasional candidate Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani and Mohd Rizwadi Ismail of Perikatan Nasional.
It was called after Kelantan Speaker Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah declared that the seat vacant because the incumbent Mohd Azizi Abu Naim had ceased to be a member of Bersatu. – August 16, 2024.
