Cops nab woman over alleged cyberbullying of deceased content creator

A 35-YEAR-OLD woman has been arrested over investigations into the suicide of content creator Rajeswary Appahu as a result of cyberbullying on TikTok.

Sentul police chief Sukarno Zahari said a 39-year-old man filed a report on Saturday over the alleged intimidation against the content creator, better known as “Esha”.

Sukarno said the suspect was arrested at 1.45am today at the Bukit Beruntung Golf Resort in Rawang.

“The suspect is being held on remand at the Sentul police headquarters until July 10 to assist in investigations,” he said in a statement.

He said the suspect, who works as a caretaker at an elderly home, did not know the victim personally and only knew of her through TikTok.

The suspect allegedly uploaded a video containing profanities, using the victim’s picture as its background.

Sukarno said police were tracking down another suspect.

The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, which provides for up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both; Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998, which provides for up to a year in prison, a fine up to RM50,000 or both; and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 for insulting behaviour, which provides for a fine not exceeding RM100.

Social activists have called for action to be taken against those who had bullied Esha on TikTok.

Her body was found in her home at about 11am last Friday. She was 29 years old.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the issue of cyberbullying on social media platforms will be presented to the cabinet on Friday to find a solution.

He added that the prime minister had asked for the presentation, following the death of the TikTok influencer. – July 8, 2024.
