Flood evacuee tally drops below 1,500


THE number of flood evacuees in three states dropped to 1,483 people at 15 relief centres as at 6am, compared with 1,675 people in 16 centres last night.

IN KELANTAN, the National Disaster Management Agency said the number of those evacuated to relief centres dropped to 1,395 to 11 centres this morning, compared with 1,587 in 12 centres last night.

It said there were eight centres in Tumpat housing 1,045 people, two in Pasir Mas (334) and one in Kuala Krai (16).

IN PAHANG, the number of evacuees was unchanged at 34 people at two relief centres in Maran, while 87 victims of the landslide incident in Cameron Highlands were at one relief centre.

IN JOHOR, there were 54 evacuees at two relief centres in Segamat this morning.

The Irrigation and Drainage Department found five rivers at dangerous levels.

They were Sungai Pulai in Johor, whose level is at 4.55m and decreasing, Sungai Golok in Kelantan (9.42m and decreasing); Sungai Perak in Perak (111.93m), Sungai Arau in Perlis (24.32m and rising), and Sungai Padas in Sabah (197.02m and rising).

It said 36 roads were closed due to floods, damaged/collapsed bridges and landslides.

The roads were Jalan Jabi-Bukit Tempurung in Johor, Jalan Sungai Sok-Chucuh Puteri in Kelantan, Jalan Marang-Wakaf Tapai in Terengganu, and Jalan Kuala Lumpur-Bentong in Pahang, as well as Jalan Bukit Jugra in Selangor. – Bernama, January 1, 2024.
