THE Royal Malaysia Police compound rate reduction and Road Transport Department (RTD) counters will be open in conjunction with the Madani government’s one-year anniversary celebrations taking place for three days starting Friday.

The Rahmah Cash Donation registration, Teacher Leave Programme registration and unclaimed money counters would also be open.

The event at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium outdoor car park will also see exhibitions of various assets of the Malaysian Armed Forces, the Malaysian Civil Defence Force and the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department.

Law Teik Hua, an associate professor at Universiti Putra Malaysia’s road safety research centre, said the police and RTD should stop offering discounts on summonses to those who have committed traffic offences.

He told a Malay-language daily that the practice of giving discounts would only result in road users continuing to disrespect the law.

“Malaysia is the only country (that gives a discount). I have never heard of any other country giving a discount on summonses. Not even our neighbouring countries. Does Singapore have one? Singapore doesn’t have one,” he said.

In 2019, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said no more discounts would be offered, but Bukit Aman replied that without a discount scheme, the police would be unable to collect revenue. – December 4, 2023.
