KUCHING lawmaker Kelvin Yii wants parliament to debate the spate of bomb threats to schools in the country and has submitted an emergency motion to the speaker on the matter. .

Yii said even though security flushes were performed at all the affected schools and no evidence of any explosives were detected, the issue cannot be taken lightly.

He said the matter did not only involve the safety of students, teachers and staff, but more importantly, was also a threat to national security.

“That is why the police should take all necessary actions and conduct a thorough to trace and detect the source of all these threats.

“Schools are supposed to be the safest place for our students to learn and grow. Not only is this act disruptive to the classes, but any act targeting the safety and security of our children is most despicable indeed.

“The fullest weight of the law must come upon these irresponsible quarters who threaten the safety and security of children,” he said in the statement.

“We do not want to create any unnecessary panic and disrupt our children’s education in the process.”

Kelvin said the motion was submitted to the speaker under Standing Order 18(1) which will allow parliament to debate the matter.

Yii said the motion would provide the Education Ministry an opportunity to brief lawmakers on its standard operating procedures in these cases.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain yesterday said cops received 37 reports of bomb threats at schools nationwide as at 2pm, with 15 reports in Selangor, six each in Kuala Lumpur and Johor, three in Penang, two each in Perak and Negri Sembilan, and one each in Kedah, Sarawak and Sabah.

“We have opened nine investigation papers,” Razarudin said.

He said the threats were sent through two email accounts using the name “taktstorer”, which translates to “disturber of peace” in German, from the beeble.com service provider. – November 23, 2023
