THE Civil Defence Force (CDF) has identified four areas in Kedah at risk of flooding due to high tides predicted for three days starting today.

They were Kuala Kedah, Kota Kuala Muda, Kuala Yan and Kuala Jerlun, said Kedah CDF director Zairil Anuar Zulmuji.

He said the phenomenon would result in 3m-high waves that could cause flooding in low-lying areas if it coincides with heavy rain.

He urged residents and vacationers to be alert of changes in sea levels.

“The high tide occurred at 12.47am today, while the high tide tomorrow and Tuesday is expected at 1.16am and 1.45am, respectively, with waves up to 3m expected. This could endanger small boats,” he told reporters in Alor Setar today.

He said the CDF was ready for any eventuality and has been monitoring the high-risk areas.

Zairil said 1,100 CDF members and assets including boats and land vehicles were on standby.

“If there is a sudden rise in water level, residents should be prepared to evacuate. Do not let children play in the water, be alert of instructions and warnings by the authorities and take care of your families,” he said. – Bernama, October 29, 2023.
