THE Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) will investigate the alleged leak of documents from a prosecutor recommending that former attorney-general Tommy Thomas drop six corruption charges against Najib Razak in 2019, current Attorney-General Idrus Harun said.

He told The Star that the same six charges against former Treasury secretary-general Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah were also recommended to be dropped.

Idrus, however, said he would not divulge any contents of the alleged leaked 12-page internal memo, which had gone viral and picked and sighted by political portals.

It is alleged that the leaked internal memo to Thomas was made on September 10, 2019.

Thomas told The Star he resigned from the post six months later without taking any documents.

“My resignation in February 2020 was unplanned, and I left without taking a single file,” he said.

“Therefore, I cannot remember this at all, as I do not have any access to any of the AGC files now.”

According to the alleged internal memo from AGC, the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) prosecution team was concerned that a strong prima facie case could not be built for the six charges.

Last week, Najib sent his second representation letter to AGC to drop the criminal breach of trust (CBT) charges he is facing with Irwan.

The former prime minister and Irwan were charged in 2018 with six counts of CBT amounting to RM6.6 billion in government funds involving payments to IPIC.

Meanwhile, Najib’s lawyer, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, and K. Kumaraendran, acting for Irwan, requested the Kuala Lumpur High Court that the date for case management be held within a month.

Judge Muhammad Jamil Hussin then fixed it for September 12.

Najib had sent his letter of representation two years ago but it was rejected, while Irwan’s representation was sent in 2020, which was not replied to by AGC, following which he sent a fresh one in March this year. – August 17, 2023.
