Dengue cases drop by 8%

DENGUE cases dropped by 8%, or 226 infections, to 2,582 in the 25th epidemiological week (ME25, June 18 to 24) compared with 2,808 in ME24.

Health Director-General Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan in a statement today said no deaths due to dengue complications were reported in ME25.

The number of hotspots increased to 130 compared with 110 in ME24, with 93 in Selangor, 22 in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, six in Kedah, three each in Penang and Sabah, and one each in Perlis, Negri Sembilan and Pahang.

“The cumulative number of dengue fever cases reported up to ME25 is 56,721, compared with 23,183 cases in the corresponding period in 2022 … an increase of 33,538 or 144.7%.

“Thirty-nine deaths due to dengue fever complications were reported (this year) compared with 16 in the corresponding period in 2022,” he said.

Dr Radzi said no chikungunya cases were recorded in ME25, bringing the cumulative total of chikungunya cases to 137.

No Zika cases have been detected. – Bernama, July 6, 2023.
