MARIA Chin Abdullah, the former Bersih 2.0 chairman, will contest the 14th general election under the PKR ticket.

Party vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar said today the activist decided to contest GE14 under her party’s logo.

“I would like to announce today, Maria Chin Abdullah one of the most renowned Malaysian activists… will be part of the PKR family,” she said at a press conference.

Maria said she would only be contesting under the PKR logo and she has not signed up officially for the party.

“I think that this is the new politics. You don’t actually feel that you need to sign up for the party. That question we can talk about it after the elections,” she said after the press conference.

Nurul Izzah confirmed that Maria will be fielded in GE14 in a safe seat, which might be of urban majority.

Subang MP R. Sivarasa said even if Maria contests without joining the party, the seat still belonged to PKR.

“If she wins, she will stand in Parliament as a Keadilan MP.”

Maria said the Pakatan Harapan manifesto reflects the issues she has always championed.

“All the agenda I’ve been fighting for… I’m keen about gender equality. It’s all in PH manifesto that will be guiding me on how we will be working together.

“(You) can’t be expecting me to join Barisan Nasional when the issues I’m fighting (for are) not being respected.”

She also said Bersih 2.0’s position as an electoral watchdog would not be comprised with her move today.

“I do not think it will be affected. I have resigned from Bersih already.” – March 23, 2018.

  • you can contest as an independent also what.... why must you do something so complicated as contest under the PKR banner without joining PKR, when you can do something as simple as join contest as an independent?

I think this" i will contest as under the PKR banner without joining PKR " mindset is about as
muddled as the "i will walk like the opposition, talk like the opposition, but i am not the opposition" mindset.

Why is it that people who cant even figure themselves out always think that they can straighten the country out.
