PAS’ ambition to be “kingmaker” is just a ruse to ensure Barisan Nasional (BN) keeps the government in the coming general elections, Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today.
The former prime minister turned opposition leader accused the Islamist party of supporting BN, who he said was the “cash is king” party.
The former prime minister also accused PAS of “supporting” the goods and services tax (GST).
PAS’ manifesto which was revealed last week, among others proposed the abolition of the GST and exempting excise tax for first-time car buyers.
To replace the GST, PAS has proposed to tax corporate savings and transactions on Bursa Malaysia.
While Pakatan Harapan has also proposed to abolish the GST, it had proposed to make up for the shortfall by minimising leakages and depending on organic growth as it expects purchasing power to increase without the GST.
Dr Mahathir, who is Bersatu chairman, was responding to a claim by Hadi at the Islamist party’s 10th anniversary celebrations of being a part of the Selangor government last weekend.
Hadi claimed PAS will play the role of kingmaker to whichever party that wanted to form the state government in Selangor or at the federal level.
In his ceramah and roadshows, Dr Mahathir has accused Prime Minister Najib of using the “cash is king” approach to win over support of the people. – March 20, 2018.
