PH’s free education an empty promise, says minister

Higher Education Minister Idris Jusoh says Pakatan's free tertiary education promise is just hot air as this has not been implemented in the states they rule. – The Malaysian Insight pic by Farhan Nazmi, March 7, 2018.

HIGHER Education Minister Idris Jusoh said Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) failure to waive all fees at University Selangor (Unisel) was proof that its promises of giving free education at all public universities if it takes over Putrajaya would not materialise.

“This story of free universities is an old one… even for Unisel, if we (the government) didn’t help, it would have shut down.

“If they (PH) really want to offer free education, why didn’t they do it at Unisel?” Idris said.

Unisel was set up in 1999 and is wholly owned and managed by the Selangor government without funding from the federal government and is thus regarded as “private” university instead of a public one.

Idris was responding to the soon-to-be-released PH manifesto, which lists, among others, its pledge of making tertiary education free to all Malaysians at public universities. – March 7, 2018.
