PAKATAN Harapan (PH) has not decided where to place former Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah for the general election and will look for seat that the activist can easily win.
The opposition pact’s chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad said PH will study which is the best seat for the activist where the ruling Barisan Nasional would not stand a chance of winning.
“We need to discuss the matter with her (Maria). We haven’t decided anything.
Maria today announced her resignation from Bersih 2.0 and that she would stand as an independent candidate in the 14th general election on a PH ticket.
She said she would only contest if given a federal seat, as she wanted to use Parliament as a platform to push for reforms.
Earlier, it was speculated that Maria would stand on a PKR ticket.
PH secretary-general Saifuddin Abdullah said PKR had brought the matter for discussion at the party’s political bureau meetings prior to this.
“No decision has been made yet,” he told The Malaysian Insight.
It is learnt that a “safe seat” will be given to Maria and she may contest in a PKR seat in either Batu, Pandan or Petaling Jaya Selatan.
Dr Mahathir added that the PH presidential council will be deciding on the common logo or symbol that all its parties and candidates will use in the election campaign.
This follows the likelihood that PH will not succeed in its application to be recognised by the Registrar of Societies, making it unable to use the PH logo.
On seat allocations, Dr Mahathir said only three states – Selangor, Perak and Malacca – had yet to finalise seat allocations between the four component parties. – March 6, 2018.
