THE counting of votes has begun after polling stations closed at 6pm on the peninsula and 5.30pm at Sabah and Sarawak after a day of a brisk voting.

The rains did little to dampen voter spirits with many showing up to vote.

However, it did disrupt polling after a flood hit several polling streams in the Baram parliamentary constituency and the EC said voting would be fixed for a later date.

The Election commission pegged voter turnout at 70%.

Malaysians across the country voted in a total of 9,560 polling stations, comprising 38,990 streams, from 8am to 6pm on the peninsula, while booths in Sabah and Sarawak were open from 7.30am to 5.30pm.

Malaysians voted for candidates in 221 parliamentary constituencies (Padang Serai has been postponed to December 7) as well as 117 state seats in Perak, Perlis, Pahang, and the state constituency of Bugaya in Sabah.

There are 21.2 million people eligible to vote, including 5.8 million additional voters, following the change in the law to reduce the minimum voting age to 18.

A simple majority of 112 will be needed to form the federal government.

The outcomes of the Perak, Pahang and Perlis state elections which were held simultaneously with the federal polls will also be known tonight.

Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu will hold state elections next year in the interest of public safety in dealing with the year-end monsoon.

The assemblies of Sabah, Sarawak, Malacca and Johor are not near the end of their terms.

The general election saw a record number of 945 candidates, 39 parties, and 108 Independents.

Pollsters have predicted that none of the three main coalitions will win a majority.
