EC suspends voting in 11 Baram polling centres due to bad weather

THE Election Commission has suspended voting in 11 polling stations in Sarawak’s Baram parliamentary constituency due to bad weather which has prevented Election Commission (EC) workers from reaching these stations by any means. 

EC chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh a new date and new polling stations would be announced once the weather returns to normal, and after EC staff are able to make their way to the stations.

The Baram seat sees a three-way fight.

Earlier, it was reported that voters in Long Bemang in Baram had to travel by boats instead of four-wheel-drive vehicles to reach a nearby secondary school on the bank of the swollen Baram River to cast their votes today.

SK Long Bemang, which is used as a polling centre, and its surrounding areas were in knee-deep water.

The Civil Defence and Fire and Rescue Service departments, which are monitoring the floods in Sarawak, have maintained their warning to people in the area to continue to be on the alert for the worst flooding.

SK Long Bemang is, however, not one of the polling stations where voting has been suspended.

Polling ends at 6pm today. – November 19, 2022.
