THE Transport Ministry has been told to hold talks with stakeholders to decide on reasonable fares for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), which will start operations in January 2027, said Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

He said fares should be people-friendly like that of Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd’s electric train service and not prohibitive as alleged on social media.

The Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd will also be generating side income that can help cover operating costs and repayment of the project construction loan from China EXIM Bank, he added.

Ismail Sabri said ECRL is a game-changer and will offer a more efficient, modern and safe transport network to the east coast, with a travel speed of 160km per hour.

The ECRL has 20 stations and connects cities, towns and industrial parks to ensure a more effective and well-connected public transport system, especially in rural areas.

Ismail Sabri said the project – which costs RM50.27 billion and involves a 665km stretch from Kelantan to Selangor – saw the involvement of more than 1,500 local companies. – Bernama, June 23, 2022.
