POLICE are investigating a report lodged against controversial rapper Namewee for allegedly insulting Islam in his latest music video, Like a Dog.

Inspector-general of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said the authorities are working with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on the case.

“The investigations paper has already been opened. MCMC is working with us,” he said at a press conference today.

Fuzi said as Namewee is not in the country, police would need to enlist MCMC’s help to track him down.

Social media activist Kamarudin Ahmad urged the MCMC to investigate the video clip, which he said showed dancers dressed provocatively near Putra Mosque in Putrajaya.

Yesterday, Namewee, whose real name is Wee Peng Chee, said the video, which was released to coincide with the Chinese New Year celebrations, is only for entertainment and that he has no intention of disrespecting any religion or race.

In the video, Namewee sings that dogs in different countries have different barks, and that while American dogs go “woof woof” and Indonesian dogs go “bow wow”, Malaysian dogs go “mari mari wang wang” (come come money money).

In the background are dancers in dog masks who move provocatively and scatter money to the beat of the music.

Namewee said the video was shot by the side of a main road in Putrajaya.

“The scene that was featured in the music video was shot by a main road in Putrajaya.

“It was never my intention to insult any religion or race.”

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said yesterday the provocative artiste is lucky to escape punishment for his actions so far, but that he would get his comeuppance sooner or later.

“Do not blame the authorities if action is taken against him,” Zahid said. – February 18, 2018.

  • The real crime is mixing religion with politics.

  • But wait , was it not our Supreme Leader who said "cash is king" , I thought all Malaysians had to submit to the will of our Great Supreme Leader , surely it is good news that even our dogs know that the only true way to redemption is to never question our Supreme Leader . We must follow our master - "cash is king" right ? The government is going through an identity crisis , when our artists reinforce the government line they are threatened with legal action , can never win with this bunch .
