THE opposition is stoking division among the Chinese community here by blowing small issues out of proportion, said MCA’s Ti Lian Ker.
The religious harmony bureau chief said recent errors by the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry and Petronas had been overblown up by the opposition in its bid to create animosity among the Chinese community.
Ti said those responsible for this were DAP’s Lim Kit Siang and Pakatan Harapan’s Saifuddin Abdullah.
“
The ministry had taken out a full-page Chinese New Year advertisement featuring the wrong lunar new year animal. It apologised soon after.
Petronas was slammed after it produced white ang pow packets instead of the traditional red.
Lim took to Twitter to highlight these mistakes and said this was why Malaysia should change its government in the next general election.
“Under BN, rooster can bark. Next year, it can grunt and oink. This is why Msia must Ubah in 14GE!” he tweeted.

Ti, who is also an MCA central committee member, also blamed DAP for playing up racial sentiments during the festive period, despite the involved parties having already apologised.
“DAP, instead of forgiving and forgetting in the spirit of Chinese New Year, has exploited and manipulated the error to the hilt. This has been part of their toxic politics of Ubah,” he said.
Social media users took to Twitter to lambast the mistakes as being insensitive and tone deaf towards the Chinese community.
“60 years on and even ministries don’t understand culture of other races in Malaysia. Shame on KPDNKK-Laman Rasmi,” Maran Matters (@maaranmatters) tweeted.
Samuel Khoo (@KoolSammm) poked fun at the mistakes, tweeting: “White ‘angpow’ from @Petronas, a barking chicken from @KPDNKK and now Vanakkam from @TourismMalaysia. SERIOUSLY? What’s next? Santa Claus giving angpow?”
Another user, Vernon Adrian Emuang (@VernonAE) warned the issue could be more dire than it seemed.
