MCA’S Chinese New Year video is not competing for an Oscar or Grammy award, but is aimed at instilling a sense of tradition among the Chinese community, said Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The MCA deputy president said that the most important thing in their video was the message they wanted to get across to all Malaysians.

“You can make your video humorous or sarcastic and, of course, people will watch it. Whether you get the vote or not, I don’t know. They (DAP) have their own script and we have ours.

“Whether our acting skills are good or not doesn’t matter. The message we want to get across is more important,” he said after MCA’s Chinese New Year open house at its headquarters in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, today.

Wee was commenting on DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang, who had said that, unlike MCA’s election results, which would only be known on polling day, the less-than stellar results of its festive videos were evident now.

He had said that MCA’s Chinese New Year video, featuring MCA president Liow Tiong Lai, Wee and secretary-general Ong Ka Chuan, as well as the entire MCA national leadership, had been unable to garner the viewership of a video made by DAP deputy secretary-general and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok.

Wee also criticised reports that an MP had recently told youngsters not to show up for the reunion dinner but show up for the general election so they could vote for the opposition.

“But this is our tradition. How can we change our tradition?”

Wee said that reunion dinners were important for the youth to connect with their families.

“We wanted to produce a video to show family values and the importance of the reunion dinner.

“This is a tradition for families and they should treasure these moments.

“We are duty-bound to go and visit our parents and not just come back for the election.

When asked if he has seen Kok’s video, Wee refused to comment.

“We leave it to the people to view it and judge (for themselves).

Wee, who is also Ayer Itam MP, said he would throw his hat in the ring to continue to defend his seat in the 14th general election.

“I have been MP for three terms in this area and have done a lot of things here. So, I’m offering to contest here again.

“The general election comes every five years, so I will challenge anyone to get a fresh mandate.”  – February 16, 2018.
