ANWAR Ibrahim has urged the Health Ministry to take proactive measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 after the country logged more than 10,089 new cases today.

The Pakatan Harapan chairman said the government was being overconfident about the resurgence of cases when the opposition asked about the latest wave of Omicron variant and the impact it could bring to the country.

“They didn’t think it through about how it will affect the people. When we asked about Covid-19, they said they are confident. We regret that they did not put the peoples as priority.”

“10,000 is not just a number, our children, too, are getting infected. I urge the government, especially the Health Ministry to take proactive measures,” he told reporters after a function in Shah Alam today.

The Port Dickson MP also reminded the Election Commission not to use the high number of Covid-19 infections in the country as an excuse to bar the opposition from campaigning in the Johor polls.

“Don’t use this as an excuse but it is okay if they state the SOP but don’t do it like in Malacca. Allow us to campaign in a hall or outside at a field with regulations in place,” he stressed.

Anwar noted that politicians should also do their part by practising social distancing while canvassing for votes and to avoid shaking hands as a preventive measure.

Malaysia logged 10,089 fresh Covid-19 infections today, Health Director-Health General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said, the first time since the nation last reported five-digit daily infections four months ago.

The last time the country recorded more than 10,000 cases was on October 2, when it logged 10,915 infections. Malaysia has been reporting more than 5,000 daily new cases for six consecutive days.

The fresh infections today push the total number of reported infections to 2.91 million.

Meanwhile, daily Covid-19 infections are expected to breach the 15,000-mark now that the country is in full Omicron wave, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said today. – February 6, 2022.
