THE timing of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigation into Maszlee Malik raises the question whether it is political in nature, said the Johor PKR deputy chief.

Jimmy Puah said many are wondering whether the investigation is linked to the Johor polls, in which the Simpang Renggam MP is set to play a major role for PKR and Pakatan Harapan (PH).

MACC’s sudden swift action seems as if there is political interference aimed to thwart the lawmaker’s preparation ahead of the polls, he added.

“The people are questioning why the case was not raised earlier. Why did the investigation suddenly appear in the heat of the Johor polls, which will be held soon?

“Maszlee is also touted as a possible PH Johor menteri besar (candidate). It is as if there is political interference that wants to disrupt the focus of Johor PKR and intimidate Maszlee.”

The anti-graft agency yesterday announced that it is investigating two reports against the lawmaker.

Maszlee is reportedly under investigation for alleged corrupt practices during his term as education minister.

Maszlee today said the investigation is an attempt to discredit him ahead of the polls.

“I have read news reports about the corruption claims involving me, and I strongly deny them.

“This is character assassination, purposely done to tarnish my image as Johor enters the state elections. I welcome any sort of investigation as I have nothing to hide.”

Puah commended the politician’s reaction in welcoming the probe, saying that he is confident that the development will not weaken the party ahead of the polls. – January 31, 2022.
