Based on statistics, 80% of road accidents in the country are due to human negligence, according to the Road Transport Department director-general. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, January 30, 2022.

THE Road Transport Department (RTD) will revoke or suspend the permits of driving schools if their former students are found to have been involved in road accidents and committed traffic offences.

RTD Director-General Zailani Hashim said this will be done by placing a code on the driving licence to detect from which institute the traffic offenders received their training.

The method is still at the planning stage and expected to be listed under the e-testing system, which will be implemented nationwide in April, he added.

Zailani said based on existing records, Malaysia has 10,569 certified driving instructors in line with Rule 11(4) of the Motor Vehicles (Driving Schools) Rules 1992.

“However, there is a backlog of 1,779 applications due to restrictions on activities such as courses, seminars and workshops enforced by the government.”
