THE cabinet has decided not to increase the electricity tariff for nine million domestic users in the country, Ismail Sabri Yaakob said.

The prime minister announced the decision in a tweet this evening.

“In line with this, the government has decided to continue with subsidies of more than RM700 million so domestic consumers will not be affected,” he tweeted.

Yesterday, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Takiyuddin Hassan said the new tariff will be announced before February 1.

“The new rates have been discussed in the cabinet six times and it was finalised yesterday.

“We will announce it soon. We will implement the Incentive-Based Regulation (IBR) on February 1 for the third year.

“So you can guess when we will implement the new tariff, maybe before the announcement of the IBR,” he had said.

Meanwhile, the Energy Commission, in a statement, said that the government on Wednesday had agreed to maintain the current electricity tariff for domestic users in the peninsula for the Regulatory Period 3 from February 1 to December 31, 2024 under the IBR mechanism.

It said the decision also applies to commercial and industrial users.

This tariff rate has been in use since January 1, 2014 when the IBR mechanism was introduced as a new policy in the setting of electricity tariffs. – January 28, 2022.
