ISLAMIC preacher Syakir Nasoha, who is under fire for allegedly making disparaging comments against non-Muslim religions, said his speech was misunderstood.

He said the edited one-minute video clip that went viral was taken out of context and meant for Muslims.

“I wasn’t criticising other religions, but just preaching what was in the Al-Quran.

“These are Quranic verses. I can’t reject these words, or I will be perceived as kafir (non-believer),” he said in a video uploaded on YouTube today.

Syakir said the duration of his talk was one and half hours and it was only for Muslims.

He said the controversial clip was recorded in 2017 in a mosque in Sg Petani, Kedah.

“I did not ask for my speech to be recorded. What I said in the video was meant for Muslims only, not for non-Muslims,” Syakir said.

“So, when the edited video was shown to non-Muslims, there could have been a misunderstanding.

“This hadith (a record of sayings, actions or tacit approval of Prophet Muhammad) cannot be understood by just looking at one video. We as Muslims also take many years to study Islam.”

Syakir was responding to the backlash on social media and the more than 3,000 police reports lodged against him for his alleged remarks against other religions.

In a one-minute video that went viral last Friday, Syakir said “at the end of time, disciples of non-Muslim religions will be scrambling together to kill Muslims in the world”.

He also claimed that the assassination of Muslims in Thailand and India were carried out by Buddhists and Hindus.

In the footage, Syakir also made disparaging statements against the Dayak community, alleging they had raped and butchered Muslims in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

Syakir said a misunderstanding took place when non-Muslims viewed the video.

“What was explained (during the talk) by our prophet was awareness and warning for Muslims.

“So, I was just relaying the prophet’s message to the people.”

He also said that many people misunderstood the meaning of the word kafir.

“Those who don’t embrace Islam are kafir. Even Muslims who don’t believe in Allah are kafir.

“Maybe, people misunderstand when they hear kafir, they think it’s bad people. Kafir in Arab is non-Muslim, doesn’t matter from what race.”

Syakir added that he has nothing against non-Muslims.

“I am not racist, anti-Buddhism or any other religion. If I was anti other races then why do I ask for help when I need work done?

“I also call on the Chinese and Indians if I need work done. Islam doesn’t forbid us from doing business with other races.

“Unity among races is not an issue.” – October 5, 2021.

  • "Talk was for MUSLIMS ONLY". So the Muslims can be told all sorts of lies about the non-Muslims behind the safety of closed doors? Did the Prophet teach or direct Muslim preachers to do so? BALING BATU SEMBUNYI TANGAN, ya? Could the Minister in charge of Muslim religious matters please confirm what this preacher is saying about what is in the Koran: These are Quranic verses. I cant reject these words, or I will be perceived as kafir (non-believer), he said in a video uploaded on YouTube today."

  • There is a saying dont judge a book by its cover but looking at his picture in the article I wonder how much this self-proclaimed preacher knows. How adequately educated is he, even in the Islamic faith ? My opinion is ...not much. If words matter he is a clear and present danger towards racial and religious harmony in a multi-racial, multi-cultural and multi-religious Malaysia !

  • Could the defense of "Talk was for NON-MUSLIMS ONLY" be used if the shoe is on the other foot?
