More than 30% of the 19,378 people who were reported Covid-19 positive over the past 24 hours were fully vaccinated, Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah says. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, September 3, 2021.

A TOTAL of 5,893 or 30.4% of the 19,378 people who tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours had been fully vaccinated with two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, said Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Of this number, 44 were warded in the intensive care units (ICU), 20 of whom were critically ill in category 5 and needed ventilator support.

Another 24 patients who suffered from breakthrough infections and were admitted at the ICU were in category 4, which means they have pneumonia and require oxygen support.

Meanwhile, there were 42 breakthrough infection cases in category 3. A category 3 patient suffers from pneumonia and is hospitalised.

A bulk of the breakthrough cases (2,972 cases) were in category 2 or mildly symptomatic.

Another 2,835 did not suffer from any symptoms and were under category 1.

A breakthrough infection refers to a person contracting a disease after being inoculated with a vaccine that is meant to prevent that very illness.

Individuals who have received the Pfizer-BioNTech, Astrazeneca and Sinovac vaccines are considered as being fully vaccinated against Covid-19 14 days after receiving the second dose.

As for recipients of single dose vaccines, such as CanSino and the vaccine by Johnson and Johnson, they would be considered fully vaccinated 28 days after vaccination.

Meanwhile, the unvaccinated formed the bulk of today’s tally at 45.7% or 8,847 cases.

Providing a breakdown on the infections, Noor Hisham said 4,410 were in category 1, 4,273 in category 3, 77 in category 3, 46 in category 4 and 41 in category 5.

As for those who were partially vaccinated with a single dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, 1,968 cases were in category 1, 2,588 in category 2, 38 in category 3, 18 in category 4 and 26 in category 5. – September 3, 2021.

  • An important lesson for Vaccinators
What is the defensive and protective role of the vaccine after vaccination? To put it simply, after the vaccine is injected intramuscularly, it rises through the bloodstream to become the body's "Minister of Internal Affairs", in charge of the internal affairs of the body, mainly to "prevent serious illness and death caused by New Coronavirus". Many of the infections caused by the new Coronavirus (COVID-19) originate from the external mucous membranes (mouth, nose, eyes, etc.). and this is an "external invasion". We can also say that the scope of vaccine prophylaxis and the entrance of virus infection are two different channels and sectors. It is because the relationship between the two is not clearly distinguished that many vaccinated persons have been "secondarily infected" (breakthrough infection) because of the misconception that "the vaccine protects both inside and outside" and negligence in self-protection that they are re-infected. A special reminder: vaccines protect inside but not outside!
