AHMAD Zahid Hamidi has called upon Umno members to band together to steer the party forward towards glory and success, fresh after the party’s vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob took over as prime minister.

The party president reminded members that Umno is one of the biggest political parties in the country with over 3.3 million members and 213,883 branches.

“This strength must not stray away from working for the betterment of the country and the people.

“Let us together mobilise efforts to drive Umno towards glory and success,” he wrote on Facebook today.

The Bagan Datuk MP added that changes are being worked out following the swearing in of Ismail as the new prime minister today.

Zahid, along with 14 Umno members, were among the party leaders who withdrew its support for former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, while 23 Umno MPs, along with newly minted prime minister Ismail, pledged their support for Muhyiddin.

Muhyiddin ultimately resigned on Monday after losing his slim majority and having his offer for a bipartisan government rejected by the opposition.

Ismail was sworn in as the ninth prime minister earlier today, after 114 lawmakers pledged their support for him.

His appointment marks the return of Umno to the top after its defeat at the 2018 general election. – August 21, 2021.
