DAP has slammed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for its latest action against its Taiping MP, Nga Kor Ming, calling it “arbitrary and highhanded”.
“This is an act of intimidation against DAP leaders. Where is that freedom from Internet censorship promised in the bill of guarantees under the Multimedia Super Corridor?” the party secretary-general told reporters in Penang today.
The Internet regulator raided Nga’s home in Ipoh yesterday, as well as his service centre in Taiping and his parents’ house in Ayer Tawau over social media posts that criticised the government. The MP’s phone was also confiscated.
Beruas MP Ngeh Koo Ham, also from Perak DAP, had said the raids were related to some comments Nga had made online, but MCMC did not specify which posts were under investigation.
Lim today also criticised the intimidation of Nga’s parents.
“They even went to his parents’ home. Was that necessary?”
Calling MCMC a “political weapon of BN”, Lim said the regulator was “not independent and only served the wishes of its political masters”.
He also recounted how his son was attacked by Barisan Nasional cybertroopers seven years ago over claims that his then teenage son had molested a classmate.
“It was a lie. It never happened. They posted the photo of an international chess player, naming her as the victim, when she has never been to Penang or met my son.
“Imagine the trauma my son had faced then. He was afraid to go to school. You can imagine why I am so angry with the BN media when they publish lies. It hurts people.
He said no charges were ever brought against the people who lied about his son, who is now 22. – January 19, 2018.
