MALAYSIA reported 6,045 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, with Selangor continuing to account for the bulk of the cases.
Today is the sixth straight day that the country has reported more than 6,000 daily cases.
The national caseload currently stands at 778,652.
The Klang Valley accounted for the highest number of infections with Selangor reporting 2,262 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 616.
Negri Sembilan reported 531 cases, Johor (500), Sabah (228), Sarawak (356), Malacca (290), Pahang (95), Penang (173), Perak (384), Labuan (75), Kedah (332), Kelantan (124), Terengganu (54) and Putrajaya (16).
Perlis reported zero cases.
Selangor has been regularly recording more than 2,000 daily cases, although the figure shot up to 3,047 yesterday. It was 2,907 on Friday.
The high number of cases in the state could be attributed to the mass testing started by the state government on May 1.
The cases in Klang Valley have been on the high side even when a full lockdown was imposed on June 1.
Following that, most parts of Selangor and 16 areas in Kuala Lumpur have been placed under a two-week enhanced movement-control order from yesterday in order to bring down the numbers.
Five other states – Kelantan, Terengganu, Perak, Pahang and Perlis – will have Covid-19 restrictions eased tomorrow as they transition into phase two of the National Recovery Plan.
Penang said today that it was also ready to move into phase two next week.
For the country to move on to the second phase, there must be a decrease in the number of daily infections to below 4,000, an increase in the percentage of fully vaccinated individuals and the healthcare system must no longer be critical.
Meanwhile, as of yesterday, 8.8 million people have been inoculated nationwide.
Of this, more than 2.5 million people or 7.8% of the population are fully inoculated while 6.1 million people, or 19.2% of the population, have received their first dose.
However statistics released by the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force showed that Selangor had the lowest percentage of the total population who have received two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine as of midnight of yesterday.
The data showed that Selangor had only fully inoculated 5.2% of its total population, trailing behind the second-lowest state Sabah with 5.8% and the third-lowest Johor with 7.1%.
Some 16.3% of the state’s population have had their first dose. – July 4, 2021.
