Malaysia logs slight increase in Covid-19 infectivity rate

MALAYSIA’S Covid-19 infectivity rate or R-naught (R0) saw a marginal increase to 0.92 yesterday, director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a tweet.

This is a 0.01 percentage points increase from the previous day’s rate of 0.91.

Malacca had the highest R0 at 1.07 followed by Penang at 1.06.

The third state with an infectivity rate higher than 1.00 was Johor which reported an R0 of 1.01.

All other states reported an r-naught of below 1.0 with Labuan recording the lowest R0 at 0.65.

The R0 indicates the number of new infections estimated to stem from a single case. 

Malaysia yesterday reported 3,515 recoveries from Covid-19 against 3,499 new infections. 

Besides this, Noor Hisham said after 16 straight days, the nation reported single-digit deaths yesterday – five – all of whom are Malaysians.

This also would be the lowest death count in the last 25 days – with Malaysia last reporting four deaths on January 18.

For the 17th consecutive day, Selangor reported the highest case by state with 1,345 cases, followed by Johor (802) and Kuala Lumpur (511). 

Selangor has logged 85,850 cases, followed by Sabah (51,216) and Kuala Lumpur (31,668). 

Johor is fast approaching to break into the top three of overall cases, as the southern state has now reported 30,345 cases. – February 14, 2021.
