MALAYSIA will not include nuclear power in its energy mix for now, but will invest in renewables instead, said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

He said the Perikatan Nasional government decided to continue with the previous Pakatan Harapan administration’s stand on this issue.

“For the time being, we have not revised the decision made by the PH government, which is not to pursue nuclear power,” he said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

The Rembau MP added there were other renewable sources of energy the government was willing to invest on.

“We are of the view that we want to develop our sources of renewable energy first. Many other sources of renewable energy are not fully explored,” Khairy said.

He however hinted Malaysia might consider nuclear energy in the future.

“Not for now, never say no. Nuclear is not viable for now,” Khairy said.

The previous PH government put a halt to explorations of nuclear energy.

In February this year, then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Malaysia will not use nuclear power, as the country had inadequate knowledge in the field.

He said the world has yet to find a safe way to dispose of radioactive waste.

The previous Barisan Nasional government initially planned to build two nuclear power plants by 2030. – August 14, 2020.

  • Nuclear power is dangerous and creates waste that is lethal for thousands of years. Thats good enough reason not to use it. A combination of sustainable renewable energy is the best way forward. Solar power is ideal for Malaysia. Every flat roof is a potential power source and it will cool the building below.
