CORRUPTION charges levelled against former finance minister Lim Guan Eng are politically motivated, said Dr Mahathir Mohamad
The former prime minister said the authorities should treat everyone in custody fairly, regardless of their stature.
He said he was “inclined to think” that the charges against Lim were politically motivated.
The government should not discriminate against Lim just because he is an opposition leader, said the former prime minister.
“He is being charged. He is not yet found guilty. The treatment of people must be the same for everyone. Discrimination like this is not justified,” Dr Mahathir said.
Lim this morning pleaded not guilty to soliciting for a bribe in the form of 10% of profits of the RM6.3 billion highway and undersea tunnel projects in Penang.
The DAP secretary-general is accused of committing the offence in March 2011 near The Gardens Hotel, Mid Valley in Kuala Lumpur, while he was the Penang chief minister.
He faces more charges in Penang on Monday and Tuesday in connection with the tunnel project and his residential acquisition. – August 7, 2020.
