THERE is no party in the world like Pakatan Harapan, said Najib Razak, in a sarcastic tribute to the opposition coalition, which has four “captains”.
“Where else in the world can we find a party like it? There is a clash of four captains. There is a de facto leader, a chairman, a president, and now, an adviser,” the Umno president said in his policy speech at the opening of the party’s 71st annual general assembly.
“This is why PH’s former ally, PAS, once said in Pakatan Harapan, there are leaders who are ‘penyangak’ (thugs). PAS has worked with (PH parties) PKR and DAP, so of course it would know.”
PAS previously worked with PKR and DAP in the now defunct Pakatan Rakyat coalition.
After splitting in 2015, PKR and DAP formed alliances with Amanah and Bersatu to form PH.
PAS is leading a second opposition alliance, Gagasan Sejahtera Rakyat, into the 14th general election.
PH’s presidential council is led by three equally ranked leaders – Anwar Ibrahim (de facto leader), Dr Mahathir Mohamad (chairman) and Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (president).
There is also a proposal to create a fourth post, that of an adviser.
On Tuesday, Najib’s deputy, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, described PH as a cruise ship with six captains that was going nowhere. – December 7, 2017.
